Collective memories brought to life
The question
Early 2011, the Dutch Institute for Picture and Sound (Beeld en Geluid) asked us to design a new portal. The most important criteria were defined: the website should reflect the needs of the users, it should be a platform for publishing and interaction, and should effectively convey that Beeld en Geluid is the specialist in audio-visual heritage.
The Challenge
We advised Beeld en Geluid to change the approach: to try triggering unique, individual memories of the Dutch radio and TV, memories embedded in each of our minds. The target of this exercise is the entire Dutch nation. The portal becomes the final piece in the puzzle expressing the 'archeology of the now' in an inspirational context.
The Concept
The Portal is considered a Moving Experience, not only encouraging the audience to discover the Beeld en Geluid archives, but also supporting the co-creation of a new collective memory. Here we can make good use of crowdsourcing, bringing niche-groups together through social media networks and using the Web both as back-end and front-end (web 3.0).
The Added Value
All the pages of the website become the start of a potential customer journey. In that sense, the online experience connects perfectly with the physical experience from the Mediapark in Hilversum. And herein lies the actual promise of conversion, starting with increased online ticketing.

About the project
A seamless blend between online and offline experience, brought forth by crowdsourcing and the triggering of collective memories of Dutch TV and radio.
This is how we challenged the ambition of the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision:
- Simplest concept ever: Sound and vision are centrally placed in a manageable folder
- First large Drupal 7 implementation in the Netherlands
- New web design (DTP) module: grid User Interface
